BETWEEN AGES FOUR TO FIVE YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

Can say all speech sounds by the age of 5. This includes the later developing sounds: ch,sh,th,z,v,r,s,and I

Understands some "order" words for instance: first, last and next

Understands some words related to time such as yesterday, today, and tomorrow

Can follow more complex directions such as "grab your backpack, get your homework, and let's sit down at the table"

Can follow simple directions from teaches such as "point to a square on this page"

Understands the majority of what is said at home and at school

Will respond when asked, "What did you say?"

Can talk without repeating words/sounds the majority of the time

Can name letters and some number's

Can use sentences with more than one verb such as: get, play, and swing. For example, "I go you push" when talking about using a swing.

Can tell a short story for instance, what they what they did at a friend's house. For Example, "I played lego, car, and swam."

Can keep a conversation going the majority of the time.

Changes the way they talk in different scenarios. For example, they talk to their infant sibling in single-words or short sentences versus speaking to their teacher in full sentences.
